Categories are as follows (reproduced from BGA notes):

Note: the hash(#) and double-hash(##) symbols indicates possible airspace issues in the vicinity. A single hash # is a warning about proximity to airspace rather than the point being in an airfield ATZ or other zone for a notified activity. Points with a double hash should only be approached and over-flown if the organisation responsible for the airspace concerned has been contacted and the use of the point has been positively agreed for the flight concerned.

Cats A, A# & A## - Points that are unambiguous, easy to find and are marked (but not necessarily named) on the current 1:500,000 CAA/ICAO air map. These include motorway junctions, major crossing line features (roads, rail, rivers etc), large airfields with an easily-seen designated point (e.g. a well defined control tower, unambiguous hangar, unambiguous intersection etc), large structures with a good, unambiguous designated point (e.g. Didcot Power Station chimney, Salisbury Cathedral etc), lighthouses, the specified ends of large dam walls, etc.

Cats B, B# & B## - As Cat A but where the point is not specifically marked on the 1:500,000 map (e.g. points in towns where the yellow area of the town obscures the feature itself).

Cats C, C# & C## - Points with less obvious features than Cats A-B and may need study or briefing before using. Includes airfields with multiple intersections where an intersection is the point and may be confusing, church towers/spires unless particularly obvious, masts & aerials, road junctions in towns or villages. Normally such points will be marked on the 1:250,000 air map.

Cats D, D# & D## - Gliding sites not suitable for use as TPs, and points which may be difficult to find or identify precisely without local knowledge or close study of the 1:50,000 map. Such points need not necessarily be marked on the 1:250,000 scale map. The category includes points intended for local club use, e.g. special departure points, TPs on local ridges etc. It includes clubs having field sites which are not easy to find; and also clubs which have not nominated a defined measuring point and so are listed only to the centre of the site and to less decimal places of Grid Ref than the points which can be accurately plotted from the 1:50,000 OS map.

Cats G, G# & G## - GPS locations, without an identifiable ground feature, based on latitude and longitude only. Primarily useful in wave flights.
